Those who remember the 70’s probably think of it as a time of progressive social change. Women’s liberty movements were at their strongest and civil rights campaigns were still rocking the world. The beginnings of environmental consciousness were seeded in the minds of ordinary people. The USA withdrew from Vietnam and the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. Apollo 14 landed on the moon and the C computer programming language appeared. Affordable pocket calculators came onto the market for the first time. In Britain it was the beginning of the Thatcher era.

Those who don’t remember the 70’s mostly have a different view. The 70’s is engraved upon social consciousness as the time when hippies ruled, the time of the Bee Gees and disco music, the far-out, groovy decade. Woodstock may have been in 1969 but for many younger people it’s the first thing they think of when the 70’s are mentioned.

A 70’s fancy dress ball can incorporate costumes from any aspect this complex decade. Skin-tight ABBA-style jumpsuits are probably the most popular but there are plenty of other ideas out there, from the returning Vietnam soldier to the Thatcherite politician. The punk ethic has its roots firmly in the 70’s too.

A 70’s fancy dress costume don’t have to be a hippy outfit or inspired by Austin Powers. While those ideas are great fun, there was far more to the 1970’s and there is a far greater variety of costumes to choose from. There is a 70’s themed costume for anyone and everyone.
